Waxfly was created as a foil and romantic interest for Karakurt in September/October 2024. Waxfly was made just as something cute to draw. But then I got interested in writing him as I developed a clearer personality-- which differed from his original purpose quite severely.

Waxfly was inspired by the feeling many artists get that to make great art, one has to suffer or see suffering. In my first draft, Waxfly moves to Bloodworm hive explicitly to witness violence, injustice and the oppresion of others. He goes to the prison and sketches the frozen bodies of impounded silkwings as he takes part in depersonalising them. He feels nothing towards those suffering under the current systems, only observes and paints them for his own desperate search for meaning.

Uhhhhh- let's just say that that version was pretty depressing and quite disturbing, I beleive it came from my own struggles with political apathy and artistic meaning, and also my understanding of how state violence can appear to those unaffected by it. I eventually realised I didn't want to write this perspective. Thus is born the most recent version of Waxfly, where he's an activist using his power within the system to challenge and oppose it. I wanted him to do this through art because I'm an artist, and that's always been a part of Waxfly. Although he still retains a bit of that apathy in regards to his thoughts on sacrifice (he beleives the needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few)
